MORPC Selected as Semifinalist in Global Challenge
January 10, 2017
After fielding 2,600 registrants, Hyperloop One released the locations of 35 remaining semifinalist teams for its Global Challenge. Hyperloop One selected the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission's Midwest Connect proposal as one of the semifinalists.
Hyperloop One is reinventing transportation by developing the world’s first Hyperloop. This technology is a new mode of transportation that moves freight and people quickly, safely, on-demand and direct from origin to destination. Passengers or cargo are loaded into the Hyperloop vehicle, or pod, and accelerate gradually via electric propulsion through a low-pressure tube. It’s fully autonomous and enclosed, eliminating pilot error and weather hazards.
The Global Challenge kicked off in May of last year as an open call to individuals, universities, companies, and governments to develop comprehensive proposals for using Hyperloop One’s transport technology.
MORPC responded to the Hyperloop One Global challenge as a result of its ongoing planning and coordination efforts to improve connectivity with neighboring regions.
“MORPC is excited that our Midwest Connect proposal was selected,” said William Murdock, MORPC Executive Director. “It connects the people and freight of Columbus, which is the fastest growing region in the Midwest, to a major transportation hub to the west, in Chicago, and to the east, in Pittsburgh.”
The semifinalists come from 17 countries, representing every continent except Antarctica. The US had 11 team selected, India had five, and four were selected from the United Kingdom. The company expects to announce a handful of finalists by May.
Now MORPC will have the opportunity to further develop its proposal by partnering with public and private entities across the corridor and illustrating how this project would improve the economies within the Midwest Connect corridor.
Teams will explore the details of their proposals with models, maps, renderings, talks and video. The Global Challenge showcase events will be held on:
- February 28th in New Delhi, India
- April 6th in Washington DC
- April 27th in London, UK
