MORPC and Columbus 2020 have partnered to launch Competitive Advantage Projects with a goal to advance strategic infrastructure investments across Central Ohio. This initiative develops and maintains a vetted list of regional infrastructure projects for the benefit of economic and community growth in the Columbus Region. The list is meant to be a resource to ensure broader awareness of priority projects and to match projects with funding and partnership opportunities. Additionally, MORPC will support priority projects through technical assistance for MORPC member communities.

The initiative is driven by county based working groups that solicit and evaluate potential infrastructure projects. MORPC provides data, support, and expertise when requested to help facilitate prioritization. County working groups then make the final determinations about the top priority projects for their communities.

Infrastructure project types considered as part of the Competitive Advantage Projects initiative include: transportation, water and sewer, telecommunications and smart technology, energy systems, and strategic infrastructure planning.

As of June 2017, more than 30 projects have been identified by seven counties as Competitive Advantage Projects. Several more counties are close to finalizing their top projects as well and the list will continue to be updated as county working groups complete their work. The projects represent good diversity in size and scale. In terms of cost, the projects range from just $500,000 to over $1 billion, although many projects will likely be constructed in multiple phases. In terms of complexity, projects range from road resurfacings in rural areas to multi-county fiber optic and smart technology efforts.
