New MORPC Survey Shows Housing, Jobs and Childcare as Top Economic Concerns for Central Ohio Residents

Leaders Listen survey results offer regional insight into challenges and opportunities shaping economic development

As Central Ohio experiences unprecedented growth, a new survey by the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC) reveals that residents are deeply concerned about housing affordability, job access and the rising cost of childcare—issues increasingly viewed as essential to the region’s economic future.

The Leaders Listen: Economic Development survey is the latest in a series developed by MORPC to gather public input across the 15-county Central Ohio region. Conducted in partnership with Measurement Resources Company and The Columbus Dispatch, the survey aimed to understand residents’ lived experiences and perceptions of economic opportunity, particularly in light of major development projects and population growth.

Key findings include:

  • Housing affordability is the top economic concern, with 73% of respondents saying housing is too expensive and 31% citing a lack of housing options.
  • A majority (51%) believe increasing the supply of affordable housing would most strengthen the economy—ranking higher than business attraction or small business support.
  • Job availability and quality remain pressing issues, with 36% pointing to a lack of high-paying jobs and 26% citing an overall shortage of jobs. Yet 54% of respondents are optimistic about the region’s job outlook.
  • Childcare is a growing economic barrier, with 27% listing it among the top three concerns. One in five families with children under five reported sacrificing childcare to afford housing.
  • Infrastructure and utilities garnered broad support, with two-thirds of respondents agreeing that more investment is needed to support growth. However, only 42% said they would support raising taxes to fund such initiatives, suggesting a desire for innovative or efficient funding solutions.

“These results reinforce that the future of Central Ohio’s economy depends on how we address housing, workforce support, and access to services like childcare. Residents are telling us they want collaborative, forward-thinking solutions—and they see these issues as interconnected, not separate silos.”

The survey findings will inform MORPC’s ongoing work through its Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) and support public and private partners as they plan for the region’s continued growth. The Leaders Listen initiative is designed to amplify the voices of residents who may not always be reached through traditional public meetings, ensuring that decisions reflect the priorities and lived experiences of people across all communities.

“The data shows that Central Ohioans recognize housing is not just a quality-of-life issue—it’s an economic issue. If we want to remain competitive and attract the workforce we need, we must invest in the fundamentals that support strong, resilient communities.”
